Negative Infill - Wynwood live/work space

NEGATIVE INFILL HOUSING
The design proposes in converting the district of Wynwood (Art District in Miami, Fl) into a more united artistic community. By implementing a strategy of creating  work studios and offices within the same residential area. This eliminates a large congestion of traffic allowing for better flow of traffic through the Wynwood area which much of is only composed of two lanes. I have proposed the ideas of small courtyards and retail space facing towards the main streets, along with courtyards located at the rear open to the public. They become accessible either through the retail store or throught the entrance of to the side. Each courtyard has its own unique space and is composed differently from one another, so that each courtyard has a very unique experience.

In my 6th year of design studio we focused the whole semester on infill buildings, so much that semester included to visit to the city of Savannah, Georgia in order to study them a bit further. Coming back from Savannah the challenge of the project was design an infill structure for the design district area, that would support 2 chosen programs out of 3. The programs consisted of Commercial, Residential, and Office. A big challenge with the whole process was trying to mix these programs in a way that would make sense and was not awkward for the users. The project also demanded for a green space of at least 30 percent of the lot, so in order to do so I opened a courtyard in the rear that would allow it to invite the public from the street front to the rear. I designed the infill so that if the building were to be duplicated down a city block, the courtyard in the middle of the two structures would create a strip mall type of atmosphere for little markets and boutiques to take advantage of the area

Floor plans start from ground level [Top] to fourth level [Bottom]. The layout shows how the buildings are laid out to create shared courtyard space between the two buildings.
